ONLY NCERT CURRICULUM FROM 2017-18 AT ALL CBSE SCHOOLS – PRIVATE SCHOOLS NOT HAPPY

CBSE schools will have to use NCERT textbooks from the 2017-18 academic session. While NCERT books are well defined for board examinations, several private schools have alleged that the move will reduce the schools to lower standards of quality education. All the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated schools have to follow NCERT curriculum from the commencing academic session 2017-18, as directed by CBSE.

This recent move will standardise study materials for schools across the country. The decision has been taken after recent reports of an eccentric experiment. A Class IV textbook asked students to suffocate a cat to death to understand the difference between living and non-living things.

The board also promised action against schools that indulge in commercial activities such as selling books, uniforms, shoes and stationery items to students. Through its 680 empanelled distribution vendors across the country, the schools have to send their demands class-wise, rather than section-wise. CBSE will also monitor the annual subscription by schools.

It is a welcome relief for millions of parents forced by schools to purchase textbooks from private publishers, often at prices 300-600% higher than the NCERT books. While NCERT books are well defined for board examinations, several private schools have alleged that the move will reduce the schools to lower standards of quality education and further observed that they are less innovative in teaching strategies.

NCERT books are less expensive

While the average cost of books recommended by the schools cost on an average of Rs 100 – 150, the average cost of NCERT books are range between Rs 50 -80 making it more easy to avail.

The document of order further stated that as per rule 19.1 (ii) of the CBSE Affiliation By-Laws, institutions such as societies, trusts and companies registered under Section 25 of the Companies Act-1956 should ensure that schools are run as a community service, and not as a business venture. This means that the educational institutions concerned shouldn’t indulge in any kind of commercial activity, it added.
